Final messageTeachers have a crucial role in improving the social inequalities between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians. They have the opportunity to educate indigenous perspectives to younger generations, which will play a massive role in demolishing negative social attitudes towards indigenous people. As a cross-curriculum priority, teachers need to take initiative to develop professionally so that they have the skills to appropriately integrate indigenous perspectives into the classroom. By having a rich knowledge of indigenous culture and issues, students will have the ability to participate positively to various issues facing the ongoing development of Australian society.

Teachers also play a vital role in improving education for indigenous children. Teachers need to take advantage of the resources available to them and implement strategies which have been created to improve education for indigenous children. Teachers also need to be aware if they have indigenous students. When teaching indigenous students, teachers need to be culturally sensitive to ensure that indigenous students are respected, understood and taught appropriately. Improving education for young Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people will give these students the opportunity to continue post-education and have more work options in their future. Education is the key to creating a more just and equal Australian society.
